Tug Valley Wastewater System

Martin County Fiscal Court and the Martin County Sanitation District
Martin County, Kentucky

Tug Valley Wastewater System

Kentucky Engineering Group staff members have worked with the Martin County Fiscal Court and the Martin County Sanitation District over the past 15 years to make this project a reality. This project will provide sanitary sewer service to the communities of Warfield, Lovely and Beauty in eastern Martin County. Kentucky Engineering Group’s owners have had a long term relationship with the Fiscal Court, Water District and Sanitation District for over 25 years and have completed many water and wastewater projects in Martin County.

Tug Valley Wastewater System SignThis idea of developing a sanitary sewer system for these eastern Martin County communities came from the Martin County Judge/ Executive, Kelly Callaham many years ago. Together with the assistance of the Big Sandy Area Development District and many years of persistence the project is finally becoming a reality.

The project includes a new 200,000 gallons per day wastewater treatment plant using the treatment process called “Sequencing Batch Reactor”. The plant is being constructed on a site purchased by the Martin County Sanitation District along KY 292 just north of Warfield.

Also included in the project is the wastewater collection system which will cover all three of the communities and is a small diameter pressure system with an individual residential grinder unit located at each residence or business. The project consists of approximately 40,200 LF of 6-inch, 4-inch, 3-inch, 2-inch and 1 3/4-inch HDPE force mains, 4 sewage pumping stations and 250 residential grinder stations.

The project was divided into two construction contracts, Contract No. 1 – Tug Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant and Contract No. 2 – Tug Valley Wastewater Collection System. Both construction contracts were advertised for construction bids in August of 2013. Construction began March 29, 2014 and both contracts have a 365 calendar day construction period. All of the construction should be complete and the system in operation by April 1, 2015. Construction cost for the project is $6,638,532.00. The project is being funded by USDA Rural Development, Community Development Block Grant, Kentucky State grants, Coal Severance funds and the US Army Corps of Engineers.
